About Us

Greetings and Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages at Biola University!

As chair, I am very pleased to introduce you to our dynamic Modern Languages program, and to our faculty, a group of committed and passionate scholars who maintain high standards in their teaching and research.

We believe that the study of a modern language constitutes a range of learning experiences that enable us to enjoy and participate more fully in the varied cultural richness of God's world.

It is in this Christian context and worldview that the professors at Biola will meet you in order to make sure that this experience will be meaningful, encouraging you to reach your intellectual potential and equipping you to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.

The goal of our program is to give you the opportunity to widen your perspectives and to grow in your appreciation for other cultures in their multiple expressions. Not only does language study offer lasting enrichment to your life, but it is our expectation that you will develop your ability to interact with and participate in the lives of the people whose language you are learning. Our interdisciplinary approach and our service-oriented curriculum offer you the opportunity to experience firsthand the language of study as well as the culture that harbors it.

If you are a heritage or native speaker of a language, you should consider studying that language in order to develop your already acquired language skills as well as to deepen your cultural knowledge and understanding, as it constitutes the personal heritage given to you by God.

I invite you to explore all of the features of our web site, especially the French and Spanish resource networks.

We look forward to meeting you at the Department of Modern Languages to share this adventure with you.

In Him,

Dr. Amy Obrist

Chair, Department of Modern Languages
