HUFS 101 Elementary Spanish I
HUFS 102 Elementary Spanish II
The elementary Spanish sequence provides the fundamentals for basic communication. Learners will be trained to use the four skills of language (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) to carry out simple activities of the language of reception (e.g. understand familiar and everyday expressions, basic personal and family information), of production (e.g. introduce oneself and others, ask and answer questions related to personal and routine matters), of interaction (e.g. can interact in a simple way and in simple terms, can handle short social exchanges). Taught with emphasis on communication and comprehension. Four hours each week plus workshop.

HUFS 201 Intermediate Spanish I
Intermediate grammar, listening, speaking, writing, reading. Learners will reinforce the structures learned during the elementary Spanish sequence. They will be trained to use intermediate level language competencies. They will be equipped to perform the activities of language perception (e.g. understand the main ideas of a text related to work, personal relationships, dreams, feelings, hopes, opinions, plans), of production (e.g. describe experiences, events, present requests, give advice, express opinions), of interaction (e.g. have enough vocabulary to interact on most topics related to travel, present and past events, hobbies, family, everyday life, exchange information). Course emphasizes communication and development of the language in various contexts. Four hours per week plus workshop.

HUFS 210 Intermediate Spanish II
Intermediate grammar, listening, speaking, writing, reading. Course develops communication in various contexts with increasing proficiency. Learners will acquire greater command over basic and intermediate level structures. They will be equipped to use the linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competencies in broader domains. At this level, the leaner can perform the activities of the language of perception (e.g., can understand the main ideas of complex texts on various topics, including semi-specialized language), of production (e.g., can express oneself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics), in interaction (e.g., can maintain a conversation and interact with a certain degree of fluency and spontaneity). Three hours per week.

HUFS 220 Spanish Conversation and Composition
- The learner will acquire a more solid command of linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competencies; s/he will develop a stronger command of grammar structures, broader lexical repertoire, good command of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms. The learner will be trained to activate the strategies s/he needs in order to understand a wide range of complex and longer texts, express him/herself with fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation possible with a native speaker. Produces well structured text, makes good use of connectors and cohesive words. Prerequisite: Spanish 210 or permission of instructor.
HUFS 221 Spanish for Heritage Speakers
This class has been designed for those students who have been raised in a bilingual (Spanish/English) and bicultural environment. These heritage speakers, for the most part, grew up hearing and speaking both Spanish and English; however, their level of proficiency in Spanish is not equal to that of a native speaker. This class intends to give the heritage learner the possibility to further develop his or her writing, oral, reading and listening skills, as well as to prepare students to use these skills in any domain, and in a culturally accepted way. This class seeks to challenge heritage learners to further their command of grammatical structures, to improve their orthography, and to expand their vocabulary. Three hours per week.

HUFS 290 Introduction to Literature in Spanish
Student will begin to read authentic literary and cultural texts and develop the vocabulary of literary analysis in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Spanish 202 or permission of instructor.
HUFS 320 Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition
Learners will develop a much stronger command of the linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competencies of the language. At this level, learners will be able to understand without difficulty almost everything heard or read. Learners can express themselves in a fluent, precise and spontaneous way, and differentiate various connotations and levels of meaning in complex texts. Learners will produce well structured written texts on a wide variety of topics. Three hours per week.
Prerequisite: HUFS 220.
HUFS 322 Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers
- Further development of spoken and written Spanish with special attention to problems encountered by heritage speakers. Focus on developing advanced language proficiency in a wide variety of educated and professional contexts.
HUFS 365 Drama
Study of Medieval, Golden Age, and modern Hispanic drama, with a focus on the use of drama to convey the message of Christianity. Development and presentation of short didactic plays.
Prerequisite: HUFS 290 or permission of instructor.
HUFS 380 Spanish in the Profession [Including Business, Communications, Medical, Etc.]
Develops oral and written skills within the context of a professional discourse. Students will examine language contexts related to the chosen area and work to develop profession-specific language proficiency.
Prerequisite: HUFS 340 or 341 or permission of the instructor.
HUFS 385 Translation
- Consecutive translation for prose documents in various fields of specialization, and subtitling. This course will provide an opening into the field of translation and will introduce students to translation theory and some specialized texts.
HUFS 400 Survey of Hispanic Literature in Translation
- Cross-listed with ENG 481 (Latin American or Spanish topics only). This course will survey a selected area of Spanish-language literature in English translation, attempting to develop an overview and comprehensive outline of literary and cultural movements of the selected body of literature. May focus on Spain, Latin America, or the works of a specific country or period.
HUFS 420 Spanish Literature
Recognized readings from recognized peninsular writers, with an emphasis on high-level proficiency in reading and writing about literature. Culture, history, and social structures will become central issues for discussion as students learn to understand another culture through its literature.
Prerequisites: HUFS 290, 340 or 341.
HUFS 430 Studies in Spanish American Literature
Selected readings from recognized Latin America writers. Emphasis on developing a high level of reading, speaking and writing proficiency covering all genres. Culture, history, and social structures will become central issues for discussion as students learn to understand another culture through its literature.
Prerequisites: HUFS 290, 340 or 341.
HUFS 460 Studies in Spanish American Culture
This course seeks to help the student synthesize an understanding of the cultures of Latin America. Both conscious and unconscious levels of culture will be analyzed, as well as the impact of social phenomena and history on culture. Attention will also be given to the fine arts as expressions of culture.
Prerequisite: HUFS 290, 340 or 341.
HUFS 490 Seminar in Hispanic Studies
In-depth study of selected issues, themes, or literary genres. Topics will vary. May be repeated with different content.
Prerequisite: HUFS 290, 320 or 322.
