The Biola Opera Theater will present in congruence with the "Year of the Arts" Sanctuary: Sacred Space

Dialogues of the Carmelites by Francis Poulenc

Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest operas, Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites brings to the stage the poignant story of 16 Carmelite nuns, martyred at the end of the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror."  The story’s one fictional character, Blanch de La Force, a young member of the threatened aristocracy, enters the Carmelite order to find escape. However, there she encounters new fears and learns what it truly means to take up one’s cross. Courage, faith and thoughts of true sanctuary are brought to their earthly limits, but through sacrifice and redemption soar to their heights.  The opera’s famous final scene is one of the most thrilling and chilling in all operatic repertoire as the nuns sing their way up the scaffold to the guillotine.

Six performances will be presented in English and in collaboration with members of the Biola University Symphony Orchestra. Directed by Dr. Jeanne Robison and conducted by Marlin Owen.
