Beth Mitchell, tuba, in recital; accompanied by Hannah Yi, piano, and joined by John Van Houten, tuba, for a Bach duo.
Before settling in Los Angeles, Beth Mitchell was principal tubist with the Women’s Philharmonic Orchestra in San Francisco. She has played with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Opera Pacific, the Orchesta Sinfonica de Monterrey, Germany’s Eurobrass, and has toured frequently throughout the United States and Europe. Beth studied tuba at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore with David Fedderly, and The University of Southern California in Los Angeles with Jim Self and Tommy Johnson. Mrs. Mitchell enjoys an active freelance career in Los Angeles and regularly gives solo and chamber recitals around the United States. She is currently on the faculties of Biola University, Pasadena City College, and Cypress College.
John Van Houten holds a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in tuba performance from the University of Southern California. He has performed with a wide variety of music ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, the Long Beach Opera, the New West Symphony, the American Winds Concert Band, the California Wind Orchestra, the Long Beach Municipal Band and the Joffery Ballet. An active studio musician, Mr. Van Houten can be heard on The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Alias, Futurama, King of the Hill, and many motion pictures including John Carter, Mission Impossible 1, 2, 3 & 4, Cars 2, Super 8, Men in Black, X-Men, Pearl Harbor, Planet of the Apes, Piglet’s Big Movie, The Hulk, Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 and 3, Spiderman 2 and 3, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Star Trek, UP, and many more. Mr. Van Houten currently teaches at California State University, Long Beach, Azusa Pacific University, Biola University and Master's College.
Hannah Yi, a Los Angeles native, studied piano at the Eastman School of Music. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Azusa Pacific University under Roza Kostrzewska Yoder and a Master of Music degree from Depaul University under Eteri Andjaparidze. In, 2001, Hannah moved to Moscow, Russia to study at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Hannah has won competitions at all levels, including the Russian National Piano Competition in San Jose, CA and the Union League Civic and Arts Scholarship Competition in Chicago, IL. She has been a staff pianist for the Chautauqua Institute as well as faculty at Depaul University Community Music Division. Currently, Ms. Yi is on faculty at Azusa Pacific University and at Orange County High School for the Arts.
