Torrey Honors Admissions Process

Step 1: Apply to Biola University

Torrey Honors is the honors undergraduate program of Biola University. You do not need to apply to Biola Univeresity before you can apply to the Torrey Honors Institute, but students will not be admitted to Torrey Honors unless they are also admitted to Biola University.

We have a limited number of spaces in our program. For this reason, we encourage you to submit your Torrey Honors application as early as possible, even if you have not heard back regarding your Biola application.

Step 2: Apply to Torrey Honors

All prospective Biola University students who have one or more of the following are invited to apply to the Torrey Honors Institute:

  1. A GPA of 3.8 and higher
  2. A combined SAT of at least 1250 (Old SAT: 1800)
  3. A composite ACT of at least 25

Please note that the Torrey application requires short essay responses. We recommend writing and editing your responses in a separate, savable document before submitting your application.

Still have questions? We're happy to help! Check out the FAQ on the right, or contact us at torrey.admissions@biola.edu

Step 3: Interview with THI Director

Per faculty committee review and recommendation of your application, you will be contacted to schedule a group or phone interview with the director of the Torrey Honors Institute.

Step 4: Notification & Confirmation

If you apply to the Torrey Honors Institute prior to March 1st, you will receive notification of admission by mid-April.

Students selected to participate must notify Torrey Honors of their intent to enroll by May 1. If you are accepted after May 1, please inform us of your intention to enroll as quickly as possible. If you missed the May 1st deadline, please contact us (information below).

I don’t meet any of the requirements. Can I still apply?

SAT and GPA scores are good indicators of student success in Torrey, but it isn't just about your test scores. If you think you would thrive in this academic community, please apply!

What happens after I submit my application?

First, your application is processed by our staff and reviewed by a Torrey Honors faculty member. If approved, you will be contacted by our admissions office to schedule an interview with the Director of the Torrey Honors Institute (either in-person or over the phone, depending on your location). If at any point your application is denied it will be reviewed a second time by our Director.

If your school doesn’t provide a weighted GPA you can put the unweighted number in both fields on the application.

Do I need to submit a writing sample to apply?

We do not require a writing sample for our application. Consider your responses to the short answer application questions as a reflection of your writing.

You are free to submit letters of recommendation, but as they are not required they may or may not factor into our admissions decision. Please have letters sent electronically to torrey.admissions@biola.edu.

We are currently admitting 130 students to the Torrey Honors Institute in the Fall. In general, the THI tries to stay at 10% of Biola’s undergrad population.
